Iyo Studies” class held.

“Iyo Studies” class held.
○date: Wednesday, June 15th, 2016, 6th & 7th Period
○place: Ehime University Senior High School
○participants: The whole of 10th grade
○lecturer: Mr. Koichi HIRATA, Professor, Mathematical Education Course, Faculty of Education, Ehime University

Prof. Hirata lectured students on the subject “Application development designed for smartphones/tablet PCs” as the 2nd class of “Culture of Ehime”. Students learned the history of Wasan, a type of Japanese mathematics uniquely developed in Japan and they learned that the best Sangaku was dedicated to Isaniwa Shrine in Matsuyama City. Sangaku is a framed picture of an Ema (a votive picture tablet) with mathematical problems and answers written on it, and dedicated to shrines and temples. Common people in the Edo period enjoyed mathematics as their hobby. Students got the taste of the Edo mathematics on an iPad using the application designed by Prof. Hirata’s laboratory. Various types of applications were introduced during the lecture, so students listened to the lecture with much interest. Students discussed the design topic “I want to develop an app like this” in groups. Fresh ideas from high school students came up.
